Panchang basics

The five elements of Panchang: Tithi, Vara, Nakshatra, Yoga, and Karana

Panchang means a five-limbed calendar. Its parts describe different relationships within a local day rather than one universal good-or-bad score.

Tithi and Karana track the Sun–Moon relationship

Tithi divides the changing angular relationship between the Sun and Moon. Karana represents half of a Tithi and therefore changes more frequently.

Vara and Nakshatra locate the day

Vara is the weekday. Nakshatra identifies the lunar mansion occupied by the Moon for the relevant time.

Yoga adds another combined measure

Nitya Yoga is derived from a combined solar and lunar longitude measure. Panchang views place it beside the other limbs and local timing windows.
